How to Prepare for an IEP Meeting: A Parent Guide
Preparing for an IEP meeting can help parents communicate clearly, protect their child’s rights, and make better decisions about services and supports. The strongest preparation usually begins before the meeting notice arrives: gather records, review progress, write concerns, and decide what outcomes your child needs.
1. Gather Your Child’s Records
Collect current and past IEPs, evaluations, progress reports, report cards, service logs, behavior records, disciplinary notices, emails, medical documentation, and work samples. Organize them by date so you can identify patterns and missing information.
2. Review Progress Before the Meeting
Look closely at goals, services, and progress reports. If your child is not making expected progress, write down specific examples and questions for the team. Ask whether the current services are enough and whether updated evaluations are needed.
3. Prepare a Parent Concerns Statement
A written parent concerns statement helps keep the meeting focused. Include your main concerns, what you have observed, what the school has reported, and what you are requesting. Keep the language factual and specific.
4. Know What You Are Requesting
Before the meeting, identify your preferred outcomes. These may include updated evaluations, revised goals, more services, assistive technology, behavior support, accommodations, placement review, or clearer progress monitoring.
